I remember when me and my brother begged my father to buy a color television. Sure Batman and Superman episodes looked fine in black & white, but when those new shows came up and said “In Technicolor”. What a letdown! So one night my father came home with a solution. He pulled out this thin piece of plastic with stripes of red and blue running across and slapped it onto the TV screen. “There! Now you have a color TV.” Sometimes we take the same approach with online marketing.
We’re told that a website is a must. So we go out and have one built. Then we don’t change it for fifteen years. Social media hits the scene and now we’re told we MUST have a Facebook page, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts. So we fill out profiles, tweet a few times, post a few things and then abandon it as we get busy with work. Sure, we can say we’re online, but it is a true presence or merely an existence?
Television is amazing now and yes, we finally did get a color television just in time for MTV. The TV remote in my house is amazing to me. I can access the TV, DVR, online services like Netflix and Amazon. The remote is key to accessing my entire entertainment system even across all the different sources of movies and music. Your website is like your TV remote. It’s the key to your online presence bringing together all those outposts we have all built in the last ten years. Social media, review sites, blogs, email and now mobile apps add new layers to what it means to “be online.”
Your website can be the hub for your content, but it is important to plan out a system where all of your online efforts are actually working together helping to build on one another and attracting ideal clients where they likely to find you. Having a website alone is not enough anymore. Bringing all these online pieces together takes a little planning, but the result is higher search ranking and more targeted traffic that actually cares about what you do.
When everything works as a system, you’re not relying on a single tactic or a single message. A system that creates a Total Online Presence with consistent quality with all the parts working together like a well oiled machine. You’re delivering information and value to customers on their terms. You end up with an engaged online community that fosters brand ambassadors, repeat and referral business. So the next time you’re looking at your website, think about your TV remote. Does it do more than change channels?
